Bungala Solar Farm - Stage 1 and 2

  • Client ElectraNet
  • Project Duration March 2017 - July 2018
  • Delivery Timeframe 18 months
  • Project Value Approximately $35 million

Enerven’s core capabilities in design, procurement, logistics, project management as well as safety, quality and environment has been leveraged supplemented by key alliance partners.

The customer

ElectraNet delivers safe, affordable and reliable solutions to power South Australian homes and businesses. Their transmission network is a crucial part of the electricity supply chain and is used to safely deliver electricity throughout South Australia including regional and remote areas. ElectraNet specialise in asset and project management, contract management and their clients include SA Power Networks, Enerven and large directly connected clients.

The opportunity

With the focus on renewable energy and South Australia’s abundance of solar resource, it is no coincidence that developers are flocking to the state to build their solar farms. The 200MW Bungala solar farm represents the first large scale solar farm constructed in South Australia, with the developers reaching financial close in March 2017.

The project is located 13km North East of Port Augusta and connects to ElectraNet’s high voltage transmission network via a dedicated 132kV line between Davenport substation and the solar farm. This electrical infrastructure is owned and operated by ElectraNet under a long term contracting arrangement with Enerven constructing it on ElectraNet’s behalf.

The solution

Enerven’s scope of work for the 200MW Bungala Solar farm involved the design and construct of all the high voltage electrical infrastructure. This included the augmentation works at ElectraNet’s Davenport substation, 13km of 132kV overhead lines and a dedicated 132kV to 33kV onsite substation.

Enerven utilised a combination of internal resources and subcontractors to deliver this project. Enerven’s core capabilities in design, procurement, logistics, project management as well as safety, quality and environment has been leveraged supplemented by key alliance partners.

At the time of being awarded the construction contract this project represented the largest solar farm
in Australia, as well as a major non-regulated construction project for ElectraNet.

Enerven enjoys the opportunity to work with its key customers to ensure the success of their projects and deliver shared results. This project represented a strong demonstration of working collaboratively under a short timeframe to ensure the success of the project.

The project was delivered under an extremely tight timeframe and in a very difficult environment meaning staffing levels and procurement were extremely challenging but the ability to overcome these challenges highlighted the strength and resolve of the team.
